This is the definitive Northern Vietnam trip. You get Hanoi's Old Quarter chaos, Ha Long Bay's limestone cathedral — and in between, Ninh Binh: the place locals call 'Ha Long Bay on land', where karst mountains rise from flooded rice paddies and you drift through them in a sampan boat while goats watch from the clifftops.
Hanoi anchors the first two days — Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, egg coffee, street food tours through the 36 ancient trading streets. Then south to Ninh Binh for Tam Coc's river-through-the-mountains boat ride and the sprawling Bai Dinh Pagoda complex. Finally northeast to Ha Long Bay for an overnight cruise through 1,600 limestone karsts — kayaking, caves, squid fishing, and sunrise from the deck.
