Overview
Four nights in Gangtok gives you something rare in Himalayan travel: breathing room. This extended itinerary covers everything the classic Sikkim circuit offers — monasteries, Tsomgo Lake, the Indo-China border at Nathula — but adds a full leisure day that most travellers wish they'd had. That extra 24 hours is where the real Sikkim reveals itself: a morning at a centuries-old monastery in Phodong that most tourists never reach, white-water rafting on the Teesta River if adventure calls, or simply wandering Gangtok's local markets buying churpi and organic Sikkimese honey.
Your private AC car handles the winding hill roads while you take in the scenery. Day one is the spectacular Teesta valley drive from Bagdogra, climbing through prayer-flag-strewn gorges into the clouds. Day two packs in Gangtok's highlights: Rumtek Monastery with its golden stupa, sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tashi Viewpoint, the ancient Enchey Monastery, and the Do Drul Chorten with its 108 prayer wheels. Day three goes high — Tsomgo Lake at 12,310 feet, Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, and if permits come through, Nathula Pass at 14,140 feet on the India-China border.
Then comes your leisure day. No alarm clock, no itinerary unless you want one. Drive to Phodong Monastery in North Sikkim, visit the historic treaty site at Kabi Longchok, or get your adrenaline fix rafting the Teesta rapids. By the time you leave on day five, you won't just have visited Sikkim — you'll have felt it. Ideal for families who don't want to rush, couples looking for mountain romance, or anyone sensible enough to know that four nights is always better than three.
